2About the Collections

The Graduate School of Arts and Letters Collection currently includes the following two collections. Each has its own characteristics, so please review them before use.

Hozawa Documents Collection

Historical manuscripts | IIIF-compatible viewer

The Hozawa Documents (朴沢文書) are a collection of medieval to early modern manuscripts handed down through the Hozawa family of Sendai. The database includes 12 medieval documents, primarily from the Northern and Southern Courts period, and 4 copies of relatively later medieval documents, all with digitized images.

  • Standard The IIIF-compatible viewer supports zoom, pan, and other image operations.
  • Terms Copyright permission is required to reuse images. → Check the terms

Tokiwa Daijō Collection

Bibliographic materials | Hierarchical (parent-child) records

The Tokiwa Daijō Collection (常盤大定旧蔵資料) is a database that brings together materials formerly owned by Tokiwa Daijō, now held separately by the Graduate School of Arts and Letters and the Tohoku University Library. Some records are organized in a parent-child hierarchy.

  • Unique Parent titles are marked with an asterisk (*) at the end.
  • Note Child titles do not appear in search results. Check the child records from the list on the right side of the parent title's detail page.
  • Terms Image licensing terms vary by sub-collection. Check the "Reuse of Content" field on the detail page. → Check the terms

4Search Results

Search results are initially sorted by relevance. You can also sort by title (ascending/descending) or year (ascending/descending).

The display can be switched between "List" view and "Thumbnail" (grid) view.

💡
Tip When a keyword matches a field other than the title, the matched portion is highlighted in the bibliographic information area.

5Image Viewer

For items with registered images, you can view them using the IIIF-compatible viewer (the default viewer for this system is Mirador 4.0). The viewer supports the following operations:

  • Zoom in and out
  • Page through multiple images
  • Download individual images (from the viewer menu)

6Transcription Viewer — Hozawa Documents only

On each item page in the Hozawa Documents collection, a transcription viewer is displayed below the IIIF-compatible image viewer.

📖
What is the Transcription Viewer? This viewer displays transcriptions (typeset renderings of cursive script and other historical handwriting) alongside the original images. It allows you to read the transcribed text while viewing the manuscript images, aiding in the study of historical documents.

The transcription viewer loads automatically when you access an item's detail page. You can compare the IIIF viewer (top) and the transcription text (bottom) side by side.

7Hierarchical Records — Tokiwa Daijō Collection only

The Tokiwa Daijō Collection organizes groups of related materials in a parent record and child record hierarchy.
